Christmas and New Year's at Blue Mountain: A Chalet for the Whole Family
Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, and so does New Year’s Day, which turns both holidays into a natural long weekend. Our chalets sit at the base of Blue Mountain, a short walk from the Village’s holiday lights and from the ski hills, with homes for 8 to 42 so the whole family lands at one address. Here is what to know before you book, and why October is the month to do it.
Which chalet for a family Christmas
| Who is coming | Chalet | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 | Apartment B1 | 4 bedrooms, fireplace, a 150 m walk to the ski lifts, pets welcome |
| Up to 10 | FO1 or FO2 | 4-bedroom cottages, fireplace, BBQ, pets welcome |
| Two families, up to 20 | FO1 + FO2 together | The two cottages side by side: one house each, Christmas dinner in one of them |
| Up to 14 | One luxury chalet | 7 bedrooms, 14 beds, private hot tub, towels included, washer and dryer |
| Up to 20 | Chalet #54 | 8 bedrooms, 15 beds, private hot tub, indoor cedar sauna, parking for 8, pets welcome |
| Up to 28 or 42 | Two or three luxury chalets | Matching houses next door to each other: one per family, everyone within a few steps |
Every bed is a real bed, and nobody is on an air mattress in the hall. If the numbers fall between the rows, booking several chalets together explains how we pair them, and the large group rentals page covers the biggest gatherings.
The three-night minimum, and why October matters
Over the holidays the minimum stay is 3 nights rather than our usual 2. With Christmas on a Friday, that is Thursday to Sunday or Friday to Monday, and the same again for New Year’s. The holiday weeks are the first thing to fill every year: we tell people to book 3 to 4 months ahead, and as of mid-October a few chalets are already taken for Christmas week. If you have a date in mind, this is the month to hold it. More on timing in how far ahead to book.
Hot tubs, fireplaces and a sauna
Chalet #54 and each of the three luxury chalets has its own private hot tub, and #54 adds an indoor cedar sauna; hot tubs close at 11 PM under the town bylaw. Every chalet has a fireplace, so Christmas Eve looks the way it should. The luxury chalets include towels; in the Swiss-style chalets and cottages, beds come made with bedding sets, pillows and comforters, and you bring your own towels.
Christmas dinner for 14 (or 20)
Each chalet has a full kitchen with pots, pans, a coffee maker and a dining area sized for the house, so the big meal happens at your own table. Fridges are standard size, so a group of 20 should bring a cooler or two for the extras. The luxury chalets have a BBQ all year round. If nobody wants to cook on the day, private chefs and caterers will bring the meal to the chalet, and Blue Mountain Village is a 10 to 20 minute walk for a dinner out or a morning coffee.
Holiday Magic at the Village
Blue Mountain Village runs Holiday Magic every year from mid-November into early January: a lit trail through the Village that comes on nightly from dusk until 10 PM and is free to walk, Santa on the weekends, live music, and on December 31st a countdown with fireworks over the mountain at midnight, with special menus and parties in the restaurants all evening. Last season it ran from November 15 to January 4; this year’s dates and the weekend line-up are on the Village’s Holiday Magic page. It is all a 10 to 20 minute walk from the chalets, so the fireworks do not come with a parking lot.
The ski hills are a 7 to 10 minute walk, with tubing, skating and snowshoeing nearby and cross-country skiing a short drive away; our winter page has the lot.
Good to know before you book
Check-in is 4 to 7 PM at our office on Grey Road 19 and checkout is 11 AM; a late checkout until 3 PM can sometimes be arranged for $75 plus tax. A booking takes a 40% deposit with the balance due 30 days before arrival, and you can cancel 30 days or more ahead for a refund less the card fee, so a Christmas booking made now is fully changeable until late November. At check-in we take a credit card pre-authorization as a security deposit, $1,000 for a 4-bedroom and $1,500 for the larger chalets; it is a hold, not a charge. Dogs are welcome at #54, FO1, FO2 and B1 with no pet fee, two pets at most; the luxury chalets are pet-free. Guests are 25 or older unless the manager approves otherwise, and the town’s noise bylaw applies at all hours. The full list is in minimum stay and check-in, and current prices are in our price guide.
