A December Weekend at Blue Mountain, Before the Holiday Rush

Blog · November 4, 2026 · By the Tyrolean Village team, family-run at Blue Mountain since 1964

Christmas week at Blue Mountain books months ahead. The three weekends before it, starting December 4, 11 and 18, are far easier to get, and they come with most of what makes the season here worth the drive: the Village lit up every night, the ski hill opening for the year, and a long table for a holiday dinner with the friends or family you never manage to see on the 25th. Here is how we’d plan one.

Who comes up in December

Groups of friends who hold their own holiday party a few weeks early. The side of the family that spends the 25th somewhere else. A ski club or a few season-pass holders who want to be here for the first runs. A small office that would rather spend the holiday party budget on a weekend away than on a banquet room. They all want the same thing: everybody under one roof, a big table, and somewhere warm to end up after dark.

Chalet #54 and the luxury chalets each have a private hot tub, #54 adds an indoor cedar sauna, and every chalet has a fireplace. There is no cleaning fee, and booking direct means no platform fee on top. Every chalet is in our price guide.

Holiday Magic in the Village

Blue Mountain Village runs its Holiday Magic season from November 20 to January 3 this year. A lit trail winds through the Village every night from dusk until 10 PM, and the season’s schedule brings Santa, festive train rides and live music; the dates for each are on the Village’s Holiday Magic page. It is a 10 to 20 minute walk from the chalets, so you can walk over after dinner and nobody has to find parking. The Village shops are on the way for anyone who still has a gift list; more on our shopping page.

The first ski weekends of the season

Blue Mountain plans to open for the season in mid-December, weather permitting, and posts the opening date and the open runs on its conditions page. Not every run is open early in the season, but the later December weekends can be your group’s first ski weekend of the year, and night lift tickets start at 3:30 PM, so a slow Saturday morning still leaves an evening on the hill. The ski hills are a 7 to 10 minute walk from the chalets, and Apartment B1 is 150 m from the lifts.

If the snow comes late, the weekend still works: the Scandinave Spa and its outdoor baths are a short drive (see our spas page), the Village and downtown Collingwood are good for an afternoon of shopping, and the chalet has the fireplace.

A holiday dinner at your own table

Each chalet has a full kitchen with pots, pans, a coffee maker and a dining area sized for the house, so the holiday dinner happens at one table instead of across two restaurant bookings. Fridges are standard size, so a big group should bring a cooler or two. If nobody wants to cook, private chefs and caterers will bring the meal to the chalet, and the Village is a short walk for a dinner out. Afterwards there’s the gift exchange by the fireplace and, at #54 and the luxury chalets, the hot tub until it closes at 11 PM under the town bylaw.

A two-night plan

  • Friday: check in between 4 and 7 PM at our office on Grey Road 19, pick up groceries on the way, then an easy dinner by the fireplace, and the hot tub if you’re at #54 or a luxury chalet.
  • Saturday: the hill, the spa or a slow morning; the Village shops in the afternoon; walk over for the Holiday Magic lights at dusk, then the big dinner back at the chalet.
  • Sunday: breakfast together before the drive home. Checkout is 11 AM; a late checkout until 3 PM can sometimes be arranged for $75 plus tax, so ask when you book.

Good to know before you book

Outside the holiday weeks the usual minimum stay is 2 nights, and the booking calendar on each chalet page shows the minimum for your dates. Christmas and New Year’s have a 3-night minimum and book first; if those are your dates, see Christmas and New Year’s at Blue Mountain. A booking takes a 40% deposit with the balance due 30 days before arrival, and you can cancel 30 days or more ahead for a refund less the card fee. At check-in we take a credit card pre-authorization as a security deposit, $1,000 for a 4-bedroom and $1,500 for the larger chalets; it is a hold, not a charge. Beds come made with bedding sets, pillows and comforters, and every chalet comes with towels. Dogs are welcome at #54, FO1, FO2 and B1 with no pet fee, two pets at most; the luxury chalets are pet-free. Guests are 25 or older unless you’re a family with children or have the manager’s approval, and the town’s noise bylaw applies at all hours. More in minimum stay and check-in.
